Sitting in the wild grass

Dumont2
There were blue flowers, maybe lupines, tall in the wild grass, with the flowers surrounding the stem and going down. There were red flowers, somewhat like lilies, but hairy and similar to the family of orchids that are multiple to a stem, that can exist in the wild in habitats that at times can be harsh. There were blue orchids in the wash between camp and the lake. The land was lush with wild grass and wild flowers, and some sort of hardy oriental cabbage in the washes. We were about 9,500 feet. It was a mountain valley. The lake was Dumont in the Rocky Mountains. Colorado, USA. Near the continental divide, up Rabbit Ears Pass, 22 miles east on Highway 40 from Steamboat Springs. Shadows blew quickly over the land. The clouds accelerating across the sky. 70 degrees and shade and wind. On high plains, not really, but feeling like a westerner, around a camp fire cooking bacon and eggs in the morning, though a frontiers man or cowboy, away from the ranch, would be lucky to have bacon and eggs to eat.

This may be my favorite thing you’ve ever written. Beautiful in terms of imagery and language, right to the last word. And succinct, too, wonderfully succinct. Thanks for sharing this snapshot of your lives with us!

Thanks Dave :-) I wrote it where I took the picture.
